The Tennessee Department of Transportation, Johnson City Traffic Engineering Section, is currently accepting engineering services bid packages for a multi-modal transit project in Johnson City. The project is expected to begin in the fall of 2019.
MTCR and surrounding communities are growing fast. Many residents of MTCR want a reliable public transit service and express bus service is one of the best ways to provide quality transit service. A recent survey conducted by a top survey company, Marketresearch.com, shows that 78% of all voters in MTCR support increasing bus service. To help provide residents with good transit service, Johnson City has agreed to allow MTCR to use MTCR’s property for transit purposes, including the proposed MTCR Town Center Redevelopment Project.
Under the proposed project, Johnson City Transit has entered into a 20-year transit services agreement with MTCR. The agreement will allow MTCR to use the roadway and sidewalks in MTCR for MTCR transit purposes. MTCR will also have the option to use the sidewalk and roadway on Johnson Street for MTCR transit purposes.
MTCR will pay Johnson City Transit $50,000 annually for 20 years. MTCR also has agreed to allow Johnson City Transit to use its land and facilities on a trial basis for MTCR transit purposes.
In addition, MTCR will be able to use Johnson Street for traffic management operations and help Johnson City Transit with pedestrian and vehicular traffic operations.
